What is Web 2.0?

I think the term Web 2.0 it is a bit of a joke and apparently there are some others that feel the same way.

People are claiming that Web 2.0 is a paradigm shift of people using community and social networking software and not a technology revolution. Considering the information sharing ideals the internet was based on, I hardly call this worthy of a new version number.

I guess it is only a name though. These marketing people need something to whip up a frenzy with and goad more people into spending money.

Wake me up when Web *.0 introduces something more interesting than HTML and Javascript have been widely replaced with something cool. AJAX hype... just shoot me now!

Web was a good name, it has been very sticky and hard to get away from. The technology behind the web interface has been doing baby steps for a long time now. To me, 3D interfaces, like Second Life are more worthy of a name like Web 2.0. That is a much bigger shift to me than the idea of a social networking site.
